Dream Into Motion NYC Fuels Entrepreneurs

This past Saturday, Dream Into Motion NYC met in Brooklyn to begin dreaming in color and was a motivational “call-to-action” event that was catered to dreamers and doers. This conference, which had more than a hundred entrepreneurs in attendance, was a cheerleading and “keep it real” forum for everyone trying to start and maintain their own business. The curated discussion was based on brand building, financial empowerment, resource education and action-based motivation.

The conference was lead by 4 panelists who were all experts in their own industry. The first person to present was Det who is an artist and brand strategist. After performing he provided the room with gems to live by like “Don’t Quit your Day Dream” and “Realistic People Don’t Change the World”. Det implored the crowd to stop thinking that we were created to work for someone else. He also gave 4 steps to building a brand; (1) identify your passion, (2) identify your brand, (3) identify your target audience, and (4) sell them stuff.

Carmen Mohan was next and spoke to the financial strategies that entrepreneurs should know when they’re starting a business. To me, it’s not that minorities are unable to build businesses like other groups of people but our issue is we are unaware of the resources that are available. After listening to Ms. Mohan, everyone in the room are now 10 steps ahead! She spoke about building financial wealth and saving to invest but the most important knowledge she dropped was leveraging your value. This hit home for many because, in this new day of social media, people have networks that would be beneficial to businesses. It is necessary to realize your value and then leverage it to get what you want.

Catherine Soliz-Rey danced to the front of the room and electrified everyone with her words of empowerment. So many times as entrepreneurs, we are so busy working on our products and services that we forget to work on ourselves. Catherine made us remember that it’s important to love yourself enough to elevate, to know that what you want is already yours and you have to stop tripping on the how and understand that actions hold more weight than just talking about it. She gave us a reminder that we have to put ourselves first on our to-do list.

Castell J.R. Barnes wrapped up the event by giving everyone hope with the example that if he can do it anyone can. From his humble beginnings, Barnes is now an author of two books and inspirational speaker. He also spoke about how writers can publish and sell a book. His instructions were, create a culture about your book, publish your book and then promote your book. Barnes believes that there are so many partnerships that can be made and entrepreneurs need to speak up for what they want and need to increase their network! He also believes that we need to teach others what we learn.

This conference was necessary for everyone who wants to start their own business or has a business. Years ago, 90% of the working class were entrepreneurs and 10% work for businesses. Now, these numbers are flipped. Why is that? It’s time to own your own. We are looking forward to attending the next Dream Into Motion event!
